LPR and DPR Military Briefings, July 28, 2014

Combined for July 28 2014
Translated from Russian by Gleb Bazov

July 27, 2014 - Order of Igor Strelkov

ORDER of the Commander-in-Chief of the Donetsk People’s Republic Militia
July 27, 2014, in the City of Donetsk

With respect to the introduction of measures to be applied to the voluntarily surrendering servicemen of the Ukrainian Armed Forces.

Recently, we have been observing a sharp increase in the number of servicemen within the ranks of the Ukrainian Armed Forces unwilling to continue fighting a fratricidal war against their own people and refusing to obey the criminal orders of their command. Despite being subjected to various types of punishment by their commanders and to violent duress by the Nazis, all the way up to extrajudicial executions, such servicemen, nevertheless, do not surrender to the forces of the DPR Militia, fearful of being subjected to repressions by the latter. Guided by considerations of humanity in the name of stopping the bloodshed and saving the lives of Ukrainian servicemen, who were forcibly sent into the area of the fratricidal war,

I HEREBY ORDER:

All the commanders and the fighters of the forces of the DPR Militia not to open fire on groups or individual servicemen of the Ukrainian Armed Forces that have raised a white flag or signified their intention to surrender in another manner. After disarmament and inspection to ensure that they carry no weapons, such persons are to be permitted through the battle ranks of the Militia and concentrated in special collection points for further transportation to the deep rear under guard. Those persons are to be assigned the status of POW [Prisoners of War].

In accordance with the Geneva Conventions “Rules of Conducting Warfare”, and the additional protocols thereto, such persons shall be provided with such nutrition and medical assistance as may be required. The use of executions, torture and humiliation in relation to them is prohibited. Any contravention of this part is considered to be a military offense and shall be punishable in accordance with the Laws of Wartime.

There shall be a formal accounting of all the above-noted persons and information regarding them shall be sent to the Staff of the DPR Militia for the determination of their future location in accordance with three schemes that are based on personal choice. Persons that voluntarily lay down arms and surrender to the forces of the DPR Militia and that have not committed grave crimes in the course of the hostilities on the territory of Novorossiya may choose:
to return to their families in Ukraine;
to join the ranks of the DPR Militia; and,
to be sent to the territory of Russia as a temporarily interned person (an option – as a refugee).

Minister of Defence
Commander of the Militia
Of the Donetsk People’s Republic
Colonel I.I. Strelkov

00:55 – July 28, 2014 – Overview of the Military Situation

In Shakhtersk, the battles are continuing at this time (00:55 MSK), there is shelling, artillery strikes are being conducted also against Gorlovka, and Gorlovka was also hit with an airstrike today. So far, there is little information from the locations of battles.

In Donetsk, high tensions persist; in the second half of the day the Junta conducted strikes using Uragan MLRS from Elenovka. Battles occurred in the area of the airport; in the evening, a column of smoke was rising above it.

Ukies continue to block the work of the OSCE monitors and are preventing them from travelling to the site of the crash of the Malaysian Boeing.

While on the Lugansk front its has been relatively quiet (without taking into account the constant artillery shelling in the course of the night), then the night on the Donetsk front is expected to be far from calm.

And for the nightcap, for better sleep – our forces shot down a Su aircraft over Antratsit. And so we hope that, despite everything, the night in Donetsk will be calmer than the last several days.

July 28, 2014 – Briefing from the Staff of Aleksey Mozgovoi for July 25-27

Our “ghosts” are again at work. After the withdrawal of the units from the closing ring of encirclement, among the personnel of the battalion and of separate units of the Militia certain measures were taken aimed at reforming our troops and changing the tactics and the performance quality of the operations aimed at eliminating the forces of the enemy.

July 25th – Fighting near Lomovatovka – a column of the enemy that was moving in the direction of Bryanka was stopped using the forces of one of our squads. Three BTRs, a tank and several Ural trucks with enemy troops were unable to break through a defence barrier organized by 6 men. Ukies were forced to retreat …

July 26th – Through the joint efforts of the mortar crews of our battalion and the artillery of the Cossack hundred, an area of enemy fortifications near Pervomaisk was destroyed.

Apart from that, over the past two days, the following was destroyed on the Pervomaisk front:
transportation trucks – 2 Urals and 1 GAZ-66;
armoured vehicles – 4 BMPs and 2 tanks; and,
an ammunition depot.

With respect to Komissarovka – one tank, 3 BMPs and 1 Ural truck were destroyed.

Overall, the enemy suffered manpower losses of over 100 men. Our losses constitute 2 lightly wounded, who have refused to leave their positions.

July 28, 2014 – Information from the Media Agency ANNA-News

It is July 27-28, and the battle for Shakhtersk continues.

Fighting continued all night and, as of 10:00 on July 28 was still ongoing. In the 8th district there is no telephone service or electricity; the battles are being fought in the area of the 12th and the 15th mines. The militiamen are spread out around the city and are firing at the enemy; the strikes are being conducted using tanks and automatic rifles.

On July 27, a maneuverable armoured group of the enemy attacked the city of Shakhtersk in the deep rear of the DPR army. Heavy clashes began on the outskirts of the city. While the miner units of the DPR army were repelling the attack, the staff of the Militia urgently sent reinforcements from the side of Krasniy Luch and from other directions toward Torez and, from there, to Shakhtersk.

The city was entered by tanks, BMPs, Grad MLRS, trucks, minivans, and light vehicles transporting fighters of the DPR Army. Among them was one of Igor Strelkov’s main assault units – the special purpose, spetsnaz Battalion “Kalmius”. Having dispersed, they entered into battle with the Kiev occupation forces.

Civil defence sirens were sounded in Shakhtersk, and several mobile communication providers ceased operations. The streets emptied. There was heavy fighting on the outskirts of the city; powerful blasts from artillery and tank fire could be heard. There were also the sounds of automatic weapons.

In Shakhtersk, there are fierce street battles between the Militia and the Nazi-guard.

Columns of armoured vehicles were moving from various sides on the outskirts of the city; eyewitness told us that lots hardware had passed through Stashovka.

A particularly heavy battle occurred in the area of the Militia’s positions near the 20th mine, as a result of which several houses burned down and enemy hardware was destroyed.

At the turn toward Torez, on the outskirts of Zhuravlyovka, there were intense tank battles, and short bursts of automatic weapons’ fire sounded constantly.

Some time following the arrival of the reinforcements, the enemy started to retreat.

As a result of the battle at the DPR positions near the 20th mine, the Ukrainian armoured vehicles that remained operational retreated, together with the infrantry, toward Ol’khovchik. Have sustained manpower and military hardware losses, the enemy was expecting fire to come from any private housing. National Guard would aim their weapons at every fence. Ukrainian flags were taken off their armoured vehicles and hidden.

Having gained a foothold in Ol’chovchik, near Polevaya Street, the Junta soldiers started to dig trenches near the forest plantation not far from the 15th mine.

In the morning of July 28, he clashes continued.

At approximately 02:00 (MSK), a new battle commenced near Rassypnaya, the fire is coming from tanks and automatic weapons.

The decisive moments of the battle for Donbass have arrived.

Recall that Shakhtersk is located on the second line of communications between Lugansk and Donetsk, and its loss could have catastrophic consequences for the defenders of Novorossiya. The decisive minutes of the battle for Donbass have arrived.

The essence of what is happening is that the Ukrainian military has begun a long-planned operation involving simultaneous strikes on converging directions from the south and from the north, bypassing Donetsk, in order to create a large Donetsk cauldron. From the south they are attacking the Shakhtersk-Torez area. From the north they are attacking Gorlovka and Debaltsevo. Diversionary attacks are being made on Pervomaisk and Donetsk.

The goal is to cut off the lines of communications and to close the ring of encirclement in Enakievo. This is the very scenario that Igor Strelkov had warned us about. And it is precisely this tactic that explains the sacrifice of the punitive forces in the Southern Cauldron. Dying as cannon fodder, the hundreds of conscripts nevertheless distract the forces of the Militia.

As they are usually wont to do, the Ukrainian side has already reported about a fantastically successful operation. According to their statements, Shakhtersk has already been taken and purged of militiamen. Allegedly, they are simultaneously attacking Debaltsevo, Torez, and Snezhnoye, and hoisting their flags everywhere, all the while moving around mechanized columns and hordes of tanks.

12:02 – July 28, 2014 – Information from the Media Agency “Novorossiya”

There was an airstrike on Shakhtersk; enemy aircraft are in the air over the city.

Ground attack jets appeared over Shakhtersk. The Militia met them with MANPADS fire; however, the aircraft were able to escape being hit by deploying heat traps. After then, one of the ground attack craft conducted an airstrike presumably in the area of the 20th mine.

11:57 – July 28, 2014 – Information from the Media Agency “Novorossiya”

In Donetsk, following a night of shelling, there are again casualties among the civilians.

Once again there again was fighting in Donetsk in the night of July 27-28. Explosions and shooting could be heard in all aread of the city. The private housing sector of the Kuybyshevskiy district, within the perimeter formed by the Stratonavtov, Marshala Zhukova, and Artyomovskaya streets, became the epicenter of the artillery shelling. Private housing was completely destroyed at the following addresses: 64 Kovalko St., 69 Gradostroiteley St., 19 Velichkina St. As well, in the garage cooperative “Zenit”, located at 3 Shakhterskaya Slava St., 7 metallic garages were destroyed. Apart from that, electrical lines and the gas pipeline were damaged.

As a result of the fighting that occurred at night, 8 civilians were harmed, of whom 3 were mortally wounded.

As of 09:30, explosions again can be heard in the city. This is being reported by the residents of the Proletarskiy and the Budennovskiy districts.

Today in Donetsk, communal services and emergency crews are working. Public transport appeared on the city motorways.

July 28, 2014 – Information from the DPR Press-Centre

Over the past day, fierce battles have been continuing in the area of Dmitrovka. This is being reported by the special correspondent of the Committee for Social Communication (KCK).

The DPR Army has withdrawn to the neighbouring Pavlovka; the forces of the sides are unequal. The militiamen were forced to retreat under massive mortar fire. A group of 20 reconnaissance volunteers stayed behind in Dmitrovka. At this moment, there is no communications with them.

According to operational information, the Ukrainian military units under the command of the Praviy Sector leader, Dmitriy Yarosh, are digging in near Dmitrovka and Marinovka. According to the direct participants of the battles, if they are stopped, the border with the Russian Federation will be under DPR control, and, therefore, it is advisable not to retreat, but to prepare a massive attack.

11:40 – July 28, 2014 – Briefing from the Staff of the DPR Militia

The enemy was attempting to advance in order to cut off the Militia, and it was partially successful because the offensive was large-scale in nature. However, despite the overwhelming forces of the enemy, the Militia was able to repel the attack. To the east of Shakhtersk the enemy sustained colossal losses.

July 28, 2014 – Information from Journalists

Last night, another attempt by the punitive forces to break through in the vicinity of the Lugansk airport was registered. It was repelled. Those that could returned to the airport.

July 28, 2014 – Military Situation Overview from Militiaman Prokhorov

The fighting continues – at 09:40 (MSK), a skirmish was ongoing in the area of Rassypnoye (near Torez).

In Shakhtersk, skirmishes are also continuing; there was a battle in the area of the 7th and the 8th districts of Shakhtersk. Fighting also continues on the outskirts of Snezhnoye.

In the area of the Saur-Mogila, a heavy battle was occurring. By the way, DPR reinforcements have arrived in Torez. Everything also is in order in Snezhnoye, so the danger to Saur-Mogila has been neutralized.

In Pervomaisk, the punitive forces have entered onto the territory of the city (in the area of the school near the Novaya road).

The situation in the occupied territories is of interest. We received information that yesterday, at approximately 23:00, a checkpoint of the Nazi-scum in the vicinity of the Golubiye Lakes (near Seversk) was shelled using ATGM or RPG, following which Ukies pummeled the forest from the mountain using Grad missiles.

11:31 (MSK) – With respect to Shakhtersk, we were informed that 2 Ukies Su aircraft tried to bomb the city, but were chased away with MANPADS salvos.

With respect to Donetsk – the city is not surrounded.

You will laugh, but the Ukrainian command has no idea what positions their soldiers occupy or in what condition their units are. For example, yesterday 2 Ukies tanks stopped near the Yasinovatovskiy overpass in Donetsk. They stayed there several hours until the locals (who emerged from the cellars) asked them: “What is it that you are doing here, in the rear of the DPR troops?” (and at the same time ripped off everything that they could from the tanks). Following this, Ukies quickly faded away, running before they could get into trouble.

And this happens where things are more or less in order. As for what is happening in the “intestine” – this the Ukie command finds out from the relatives that get calls from the besieged troops. For instance, the flight of the 75 Nikolayevka paratroopers was a complete surprise for the ATO staff. Same with yesterday’s gang fight in the city of Shchastye between the Alpha unit and the mercenary Battalion Aidar (with the eventual participation of paratroopers from the 80th Brigade).

At this moment, there is no clear line of front, and, as we can see, settlements easily pass from one side to another.

The main outcome was yet another failed Ukie offensive that was intended to de-blocaked the units surrounded in the “intestine”. They threw their last reserves into battle, and, by the looks of it, have now exhausted their offensive potential until the commencement of the third wave of mobilization. Small local victories have had no bearing on the overall operational situation.

13:40 – July 28, 2014 – Information from LifeNews Information Agency

The Ukrainian army has not taken the Saur-Mogila height; fighting is continuing. Earlier, the press service of the Ukrainian President Pyotr Poroshenko disseminated information suggesting that the strategically important point came under control of the Ukrainian military.

The Ukrainian forces were unable to take control of the Saur-Mogila height near the city of Snezhnoye (DPR), where the Militia of the DPR has been holding positions since the beginning of July. This information was provided to LifeNews by the coordinator of the information centre “South-Eastern Front”, Konstantin Knyrik. According to his information, militiamen informed that fighting continues in the area of the strategic height and of the neighbouring villages Marinovka and Dmitrovka, and that there can be no talk about surrendering Saur-Mogila.

15:00 – July 28, 2014 – Briefing from the Staff of the DPR Ministry of Defence

DPR Press Centre © http://dnr.today

On July 27, the enemy undertook serious attempts at an offensive – significant forces were pulled up to the sites of the breakthroughs, and, in certain areas, they had success. However, the troops of the DPR Armed Forces were able to thwart all the undertaken attempts.

In particular, the attempted breakthrough by a large grouping of the Ukrainian forces to the east of Shakhtersk led to the grouping suffering simply colossal losses.

Whereas before such losses could be promptly calculated, now, even as of the morning of July 28, we are still unable conclusively to determine how many of the servicemen of the Ukrainian army found their death on the field of battle. Fighting in the Shakhtersk area continues.

In Donetsk, following a night of shelling, there are again casualties among the civilians.

Once again there again was fighting in Donetsk in the night of July 27-28. Explosions and shooting could be heard in all aread of the city. 15:00 – July 28, 2014 – LPR Briefing for the First Part of the Day (as of 15:00)

Today, the fiercest clashes with the enemy on the outskirts of Lugansk occurred in the area of the Georgievka settlement. Units of the LPR were able to take control of the dominant height at the road junction, while the enemy occupied positions closer to the settlement itself.

Throughout last night, in the morning, and throught the day, units of the DPR conducted targeted shelling of the enemy’s positions in the places of the greatest concentration of enemy forces. In particular, Lugansk forces inflicted serious losses on the aggressor in the Georgievka area, as well as near the settlement of Cheluskinets.

Yesterday night the Ukrainian side launched two reconnaissance drones into the skies over the city, and today at midday, an aircraft of the Ukrainian Air Force conducted an airstrike on the settlement of Novosvetlovka (Krasnodon region).

The Ukrainian Armed Forces continued the shelling of Slavyansk, and, in particular, mines and shells (presumably from a Tulpan heavy mortar and a self-propelled artillery unit) hit in the areas of Rudnev Street, School No. 35, and Shcherbakov Street.

Movement of a large tank column toward Krasnoe-Perezvanovka was noted; units of the LPR were brought into the state of heightened battle alert.

Yesterday, in the vicinity of the settlement of Depreradovka, LPR units inflicted serious losses on enemy forces; 1 tank, 2 BTRs and 15 fighters of the Ukrainian army were eliminated.

18:50 – July 28, 2014 – Information from a Journalist with LPR Press Service, A. Toporov

Today Ukies bombed a nursing home on the Geologicheskaya Street. This is the Shcherbakov district in the south-eastern part of Lugansk. Five elderly were killed. I do not know if they were children of the [Great Patriotic] War, or even its participants, but it is highly unlikely that they ever expected that the whistle of the shells, familiar to all of us through black-and-white newsreels and Soviet films, will ever come back to their home …

19:15 – July 28, 2014 – Commentary from LPR Prime Minister Bashirov

I hope to God that I am mistaken. The video crew of the press service is rushing over to Kambrod. Residents called us – a shell hit a nursing home. Initial information: 5 were killed and UNKNOWN NUMBER were wounded. The hospitals are waiting. Can you imagine the difference between treating wounded who are 30-40 years old and wounded elderly, who are 60-70 years old?!

Yes. The news has been confirmed. And they could not even run …

July 28, 2014 – Novorossiya Military Briefing

18:55 – The Gorlovka Diocesan Administration came under artillery fire by the Ukrainian punitive forces – corpses of the killed are killed lying on the surrounding streets; church buildings were damaged.

18:54 – Ukraining military bombed a nursing home on the Geologicheskaya Street. This is the Shcherbakov district in the south-eastern part of Lugansk. Five elderly were killed. There is an unknown number of wounded.

18:50 – Information from the DPR Press Centre: during the day, street battles were ongoing between the Militia and the Ukrainian punitive forces. The city essentially has been divided into two zones of control. The city continues to be subjected to airstrikes and artillery shelling by the Ukrainian army. Cluster ammunition, MLRS and howitzers are being used.

18:44 – Over the past week, every morning (around 04:00 am) 3 MI-24 and 1 MI-8 helicopters have been taking off from the Kramatorsk airfield, flying through Semyonovka in the southern direction. They return having, by the looks of it, exhausted their ammunition.

18:20 – Two refueling trucks and 1 BTR with several infantry atop the armour came through Glinki, headed toward Kumachevo.

18:19 – The Ukrainian Air Force conducted a rocket-bomb strike at the Lugansk Cartridge Works, also known as the Lenin plant.

July 28, 2014 – Commentary Regarding the Military Situation from Militiaman Prokhorov

- who now controls Debaltsevo and Enakievo?

Prokhorov: I will tell you right away – I don’t have a full picture of what is happening in the DPR; I only have a fragmentary understanding. Yesterday, Debaltsevo was surrendered by the costumed Cossacks – without battle. Ukies destroyed the local House of Culture and the railway workers’ hospital, where wounded were recovering. Reinforcements were sent there, and they are the ones maintaining the resistance in the city. However, the larger part of the city is controlled by Ukies. With respect to Enakievo, Bezler’s Gorlovka militiamen are in control there. I was recently told that they’ve declared an open hunting season in those parts.

- with respct to Shakhtersk.

Prokhorov: Ukies are only on the outskirts of Shakhtersk. Militiamen have dispersed throughout the city. Skirmishes periodically occur in the area of the settlement of the 12th mine and in the 7th and 8th districts of the city.

- with respect to Donetsk, Gorlovka and Popasnoye

Prokhorov: Neither Donetsk nor Gorlovka have been cut off. Nothing of the sort. Ukies were kicked out of Popasnoye.

By the way, sniper continue to work in Lisichansk to this day. With respect to Saur-Mogila, I was told that near Amvrosievka a Ukie column was discovered (totaling approximately 30 vehicles) – we are following its fate very closely.

Near Dolzhanskiy, the 24th Lvov Brigade is in a state of panic – they are requesting to be de-blockaded. I will remind you - the units of the 24th, 28th, 72nd, and 51st mechanized brigades, of the 79th Aeromobile, of the 3rd spetsnaz regiment, and of the combined border guard detachment have been blocked inside the “intestine”.

July 29, 2014 – Latest Hourly Briefings from Locations

In Shakhtersk, fierce battles continue, there is no information about losses yet. Near Saur-Mogila, all the attacks have been repelled; Ukies are sustaining fairly serious losses, and the Militia has entrenched itself well there. For now, we have news that a tank company and several armoured vehicles have been destroyed.

With respect to the 79th Brigade: Ukies, you spend your time [in this forum], so let your guys know. In Nikolayev, they are now arresting the mothers of the guys in the 79th Brigade, who are serving their “motherland”. They were rather harshly dispersed, and a number of criminal investigations have been opened. So tell them to think who it is that they are fighting for.

23:05 (MSK) – Information from Seversk: bursts of automatic weapons’ fire can be heard coming from the side of Chernogorovka, and explosions – from the side of the third settlement.

23:15 (MSK) – Intensive artillery shelling of Yasinovatoye has begun; a number of shells hit a technical school. Fierce fighting near Yasinovatoye, which began about an hour ago, is continuing. Battles near Shakhtersk have resumed. And no, Torez has not been taken by Ukies.

00:00 (MSK) – A strike using Uragan MLRS was conducted from the side of Elenovka in the direction of the Donetsk railway terminal.

00:44 (MSK) – In Lisichansk, shots can be heard; there is a skirmish at a check point located at the exist from the city.

00:55 (MSK) – Howitzer artillery strikes are being conducted on Mandrykino and Yasinovatoye.

Warning of Impending Terrorist Acts by the Kiev Junta

Warning of Impending Terrorist Acts by the Kiev Junta

Video: Address by the Resistance Forces - Avakov and Nalyvaichenko Preparing Terrorist Acts

(w/ENG subs by Arioch The YouTube Channel)

Translated from Russian by Gleb Bazov
#1 - Warning from Anton Guryanov

Comrades, Friends, Brother and Sisters,

I, Anton Guryanov, speaking on behalf of the Resistance Forces that I have the honour to represent, will now make an official address. The text of the address is in front of me, and, in order to make no mistakes, I will refer to it, from time to time.

According to our information, the Nazis of the Kiev Junta are planning to conduct a major terrorist act in the next several days. Or a series of terrorist acts. On the territory of Ukraine.

For the past several days, Messr. Avakov and his assistant Shkiryak have been conducting preparation for this in the mass media. The goal of this is to blame the terrorist acts on Russia and to introduce a regime of total dictatorship on the territory of Ukraine. The maximum goal is to create the conditions for a NATO military intervention, and of the Polish-Lithuanian contingent in particular.

The responsibility for the operation code-named “Spalokhutemreve” has been placed on an SBU [Ukrainian Security Service] Major, who has been introducing himself as Alexei Nikonov. He is a close associate of Messr. Nalyvaichenko.

This information was provided by high-ranking officials in Kiev, who are concerned for their future after the fall of the Kiev Junta, which inevitably will come.

And so, the Ukrainian Nazis have chosen to follow in the footsteps of their predecessors – the German Nazis. They will now be implementing an operation analogous to the Reichstag Fire. All that can be said is that they are following in the footsteps of their predecessors.

What should the common people, now listening to this address, do? In the next several days, do not visit places of public concentration of people. Try either not to use public transportation or to use it as sparingly as possible. In particular, this concerns the metro system. Pay close attention to looking after your children. Look after your buildings’ cellars and entranceways, to ensure that no strangers go there and that no unknown cargos are deposited in your cellars and entranceways.

Please disseminate this information to your acquaintances, friends and neighbours – to anyone that you can. And may God help us.

#2 - Warning from "Cold War and Novorossiya"

Dear Compatriots!

In particular, this concerns the residents of Pavlograd, in the Dnepropetrovsk region! Please read this message and pass it on to everyone!

A terrifying provocation is being prepared in the city of Pavlograd, in the Dnepropetrovsk region. This magnitude of this provocation in terms of casualties will many times over exceed the number of victims of the crash of the Malaysian Boeing!

Kolomoiskiy and the Kiev Junta have prepared groups of Russian-speaking militants who, under the guise of militiamen, will organize a “night of long knives” in Pavlograd. Hundreds of peaceful civilians will die! This will be staged as “payback” for those who died in the Lugansk and the Donetsk Republics.

False witnesses, who will confirm this, have already been prepared. It may happen as soon as this night! The Nazis should not be permitted to kill with impunity!

Please repost this message to all your acquaintances and love ones, call them! The more people know about this, the lower the likelihood that it will happen!

Our lack of indifference must stop the immoral monsters that have concocted this terrifying provocation! Do not take sin upon yourself, have pity on the people that may be murdered!

Catastrophic Desertions and Losses in the Ukrainian Army - Official Ukrainian Reports, July 19, 2014

Catastrophic Desertions and Losses in the Ukrainian Army - Official Ukrainian Reports, July 19, 2014
Preamble by Gleb Bazov: It is rare that we report on the workings of the aggressor across the battle lines. This item is different. Before you is a translation, kindly prepared by Valentina Lisitsa, of a report from the head of the Ukrainian Security Service, V.O. Nalyvaichenko, to the President of Ukraine, P.A. Poroshenko. It is an important document, which, we hope, you will distribute widely.
No further commentary is necessary, other than the following brief quotation. According to V.O. Nalyvaichenko, "2/3 of the active combat military units currently participating in the ATO will simply cease to exist in as little as 4 to 5 days" due to mass desertions and casualties. To provide context for this letter, provided below is another document recently publicized as an internal memorandum from the Ukrainian Ministry of Defence, which details recent casualties of the Ukrainian army, equally as catastrophic as its desertion rates

Signed V.O. Nalyvaichenko 20/7 [July 20]
I am reporting.
In the period from July 14th to 19th, 2014 we witness a catastrophic increase (of 3473 people, or 47%) in the number of deserters in the units of the Army and the National Guard – in comparison with last week’s numbers (1847 people, 25%).
Apart from that, during the stated period the number of missing in action had increased as well (1344 people , 47%, last week – 344 people, 10%).
This phenomenon is connected to increased activity of the enemy in the Donetsk and the Lugansk regions as well as to the increase in the number of casualties in the ranks of the above-mentioned structures.
This fact [negatively] influences the combat-worthiness of the personnel and makes continuation of the ATO impossible. In the event the negative trend continues at the same level, I estimate that 2/3 of the active combat military units currently participating in the ATO will simply cease to exist in as little as 4 to 5 days.
With the aim of preserving the combat potential of our military structures, I am proposing that we perform a withdrawal maneuver of our militarily units to the area around Dobropil'ya and Smolyaninove. After replenishment of the ammunition stocks, re-grouping as well as rotation of the personnel by at least 60%, we can continue the offensive.
Signed,
The Head of the Ukrainian Security Service of Ukraine,
V. Nalyvaichenko
Agreed,
The head of the Antiterrorist Centre of the Security Service,

The Catastrophe of #MH17: BBC in the Search of the “#BUK” – The Video Report Censored by BBC

Translated from Russian by Gleb Bazov
Note: Videos & a PDF of the Google Web-cache Have Been Preserved and Are Available Upon Request

Preamble: Why did the BBC delete this report by Olga Ivshina? Is it because the BBC team was unable to find any evidence that a rocket was launched in the area that the Ukrainian Security Service (“SBU”) alleges to be the place from which the Novorossiya Militia launched a “BUK” missile?

Or is it because every eyewitness interviewed by the BBC team specifically indicated the presence of Ukrainian military aircraft right beside the Malaysian Airlines Boeing MH17 at the time that it was shot down?

Or is it because of eyewitness accounts (like the one posted following the transcript of the BBC report) confirming that the Ukrainian air force regularly used civilian aircraft flying over Novorossiya as human shields to protect its military aircraft conducting strikes against civilian population from the Militia’s anti-aircraft units?

I reserve the final judgment to the readers of this blog. This entry is broken down into:
  1. introductory paragraphs to the BBC video report;
  2. English-language transcript of the BBC video report; and,
  3. a video interview with Elena, a Militia fighter, recorded in Slavyansk on or about June 18, 2014, or one month prior to the MH17 catastrophe, wherein she states that, even then, the Ukrainian military aircraft would customarily hide behind civilian aircraft to bomb civilian targets on the ground.
In the last part of this entry Elena predicts that the Ukrainian military will stage the horrible catastrophe like the MH17 crash - she makes this prediction one whole month prior to the disaster.

Introductory Paragraphs to the BBC Video Report

The “black boxes” of the crashed Malaysian Boeing have finally been transferred into the hands of the experts. However, how much can they tell us?

The recorders logged the coordinates and the heading of the aircraft at the time of the incident and may have recorded the sound of the explosion. However, they will not tell us what exactly caused the explosion.

The inhabitants of the nearby villages are certain that they saw military aircraft in the sky shortly prior to the catastrophe. According to them, it actually was the jet fighters that brought down the Boeing.

The Ukrainian government rejects this version of events. They believe that the Boeing was shot down using a missile from a “BUK” complex that came in from Russia.

The Ukrainian Security Service has published photographs and a video, which, in its opinion, prove that the Boeing was shot down with a “BUK” missile.

BBC reporter Olga Ivshina and producer Oksana Vozhdayeva decided to find the place from which the missile was allegedly launched.
Transcript of the BBC Video Report

DPR Representative: Here it is.

Olga Ivshina, BBC: The black boxes from the crashed Boeing are finally being transferred into the hands of the experts.

Eyewitness #1: There were two explosions in the air. And this is how it broke apart. And [the fragments] blew apart like this, to the sides. And when …

Eyewitness #2: … And there was another aircraft, a military one, beside it. Everybody saw it.

Eyewitness #1: Yes, yes. It was flying under it, because it could be seen. It was proceeding underneath, below the civilian one.

Eyewitness #3: There were sounds of an explosion. But they were in the sky. They came from the sky. Then this plane made a sharp turn-around like this. It changed its trajectory and headed in that direction [indicating the direction with her hands].

Olga Ivshina, BBC: The Ukrainian government rejects this version of events. They believe that the Boeing was shot down using a missile from a “BUK” complex that came in from the direction of Russia.

Vitaliy Naida, Department of Counterintelligence of SBU [Ukrainian Security Service]: This was a BUK M1 system from which the aircraft was shot down. It came to Ukraine early in the morning on the 17th of July. It was delivered by a tow truck to the city of Donetsk. After that, it was redeployed from Donetsk, as part of a column of military equipment, to the area of the city of Torez, to the area of Snezhnoye, to the area of Pervomaisk.

Olga Ivshina, BBC: The Ukrainian Security Service has published photographs and a video, which, in its opinion, prove that the Boeing was shot down with a “BUK” missile. We attempted to verify these photographs and information at the location.

One of the photographs showed a landscape not far from the city of Torez, on which smoke could be seen coming from the presumed location of the missile’s launch. We attempted to find this location, and it appears that we were successful.

We are now on the outskirts of the city of Torez. Behind me, approximately five kilometres away, is the city of Snezhnoye. And the landscape here matches the landscape that we can see on the photograph published by the Ukrainian Security Service.

To find the place from which the smoke was allegedly coming from, we adopted as markers these three poplars and the group of trees. Presumably, this is the place that can be seen on the photograph published by the SBU. And here are our markers: the three solitary poplars and the small group of trees in the distance.

The smoke that can be seen on the photograph came from somewhere over there [pointing behind her], behind my back. The SBU believes that this is a trace coming from the launch of a “BUK” missile.

However, it must be noted that there are here, approximately in the same place, the Saur-Mogila memorial, near which the fighting continues almost unabated, and a coalmine. It turns out that the smoke with the same degree of probability could have been coming from any of these locations.

Having circled around the nearby fields, we were unable to find any traces of a missile launch. Nor did the local inhabitants that we encountered see any “BUK” either.

At the ruins of an apartment building in the city of Snezhnoye, the topic of the jet fighters that may have been escorting civilian aircraft comes up again. A bomb dropped from above took away the lives of eleven civilians here.

Sergey Godovanets, Commander of the Militia of the city of Snezhnoye: They use these civilian aircraft to hide behind them. It is only now that they stopped flying over us – but, usually, civilian aircraft would always fly above us. And they hide [behind them]. [The experience in] Slavyansk had demonstrated that they would fly out from behind a civilian aircraft, bomb away, and then hide, once again, behind the civilian aircraft and fly away.

Olga Ivshina, BBC: The commander of the local militia emphasizes that they have no weaponry capable of shooting down a jet fighter [flying] at a significant height. However, he says that if such weaponry were to appear, they would have tried to.

Sergey Godovanets: If we know that it is not a civilian aircraft, but a military one, then – yes.

Olga Ivshina, BBC: So, could the Boeing have been shot down by the militias that had mistaken it for a military aircraft? There is as yet no unequivocal confirmation of either this or any other version [of what took place]. The international experts are just beginning their work with the information obtained from the crashed airliner. It now appears that it is difficult to overstate the importance of this investigation. #15 - Dissecting the Fake Intercept Disseminated by SBU (Ukrainian Security Service)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V5E8kDo2n6g

Note: Half of the Post Translated; The Remaining Half is Speculative
Complete Original of the Post (in Russian) Can Be Found at Eugene-DF LiveJournal

In the disseminated intercept, the place from which the missile was allegedly launched is clearly indicated: the checkpoint at the settlement of Chernukhino.

Pay close attention at the Alleged Map of the MH17 Catastrophe.

As you can see, the distance from the point of launch to the point of the fall is 37 kilometres. At the same time, the elevation of the plane was 10-11 kilometres. For the Russian BUK M2 this distance is, in fact, achievable (although with a very important caveat discussed below).

However, Ukraine does not, and cannot, have modern digital high-tech Anti-Aircraft systems in its arsenal. What it does have, at best, is the older version BUK M1. The system itself is not too bad, and could even fit the stated distance. Except for the caveat that was mentioned.

The thing is that most short to medium range Anti-Aircraft systems work extremely poorly in a “pursuit” mode. There are a number of reasons for this, and I do not intend to belabor the point, but you can take it as an axiom that when the launch is made in “pursuit” of the target, the maximum distance of the launch that successfully hits the target is at least half of the advertised maximum distance (in reality, it even worse, but let’s leave aside the sad part). Accordingly, the real distance of a “pursuit” launch for BUK M1 is 16 kilometres. What’s more, the last 3 kilometres are purely “God willing” and “without guarantees.”

And, so, we have the background. Let’s see how the picture unfolds:

The launch is alleged to have been made from Chernukhino. The maximum distance of the launch is 16 kilometres. The aircraft fell between Snezhnoye and Torez. That’s 37 kilometres, which is 20 kilometres more than the maximum possible point at which the plain could have been hit. You know, even a plane with turned-off engines can’t glide like that. But the trouble is that the aircraft was not whole.

According to the pattern of the spread of fuselage fragments and bodies, the plane was ruptured practically with the first shot. Here it must be mentioned that the high-explosive/fragmentation warhead of the rocket has a mass of approximately 50 kilograms (by the way, Ukrainians have an outdated modification, which is only 40 kilograms).

Overall, that’s not too little; however, it must be understood that it detonates not when it sticks into an airplane, but when it is still at a certain, and fairly significant distance. Moreover, the main strike factor is not the blast wave, but far more significantly – the stream of fragments. These fragments are previously prepared rods (and in the earlier versions – little cubes, if I recall correctly). And yes, for a jet fighter, that, in itself, is more than sufficient.

However, here we are dealing with a huge airliner. Yes, one rocket will rip the casing, cause depressurization, and will kill a lot of passengers. But it will not break up the airliner into pieces. Given certain conditions, the pilots may even be able to land it. And, in fact, there have been precedents (to be provided in future posts). For example – the very same An-28, which is alleged to have been the first victim of a BUK system; even though it was done for, but the crew was able to successfully catapult out. Which, in some way, symbolizes. An An-28, by the way, is far smaller than a Boeing.

Nevertheless, this has relation to the next part of our analysis. For now, let’s accept as a fact the break-up of the aircraft in the air, at a significant height (which is, in essence, what was observed. Allow me to remind you: “fragments spread over a radius of 15 kilometres.” The key here is that this means the following: the aircraft (or, more precisely, the core of the aircraft) fell literally at the point where the rocket impacted it. Clarifying: as soon as the aircraft turned into a host of fragments of different mass, the separation of these fragments began due to air resistance and the difference in inertia. The densest fragment flew a further 3-6 kilometres, falling more and more steeply. The lightest – spread out and, due to gliding and air currents, fell somewhere within a 10 kilometre radius. The medium ones (primarily pieces of casing with high sail-effect and the victims’ bodies) – fell almost vertically.

In other words, the rocket caught up to the plane no closer than 25 kilometres away from Chernukhino. Which is absolutely impossible for a BUK system.

By the way, we can’t overlook the fact that, at maximum distances, BUK can be used only provided there is support from an external radar installation for location and guiding purposes. In other words, even if a rockets flies far, BUK’s mobile radar does not cover its entire distance.

Accordingly, if SBU’s video above is not fake, then, to our surprise, we discover that it was literally impossible for the aircraft to be shot down by the rebel’s BUK. By the way, what exactly this BUK was doing in Chernukhino with the Cossacks is pretty much inexplicable. It is 60 kilometres whether you go to Donetsk or to Lugansk from there, and this BUK would be unable to protect the skies over either of the key cities. Nor are there any hostilities in the area. It’s also strange for the Militia to expect enemy planes there – it’s not like the pilots are their own enemies to make such detours over the enemy’s territory, is it? Well, all right. As I already stated, let’s accept, for the moment, that the intercept is not fake.

And that is what is so strange here: SBU literally offers evidence that proves that that the Militia had no part in the shooting down of the Boeing! The fact that they blame themselves in the recording is quite understandable. Unlike the fascists, they have a conscience, which takes its toll until you are sure it was not you who did it.

Ok. But somebody did, in fact, shoot down the plane?

Of course it was shot down. And here we have another question: what if this recording is a falsification through and through? Then it had to have been prepared somehow? And then disseminated?

That’s when smoke starts to clear, and mirrors – to break.

That’s the problem with tricks.

#14 - An Industry Outlet Confirms Carlos (@spainbuca) as ATC at Borispol Airport in Kiev

Original: EturboNews (ETN Global Travel Industry News) - July 17, 2014

ETN received information from an air traffic controller in Kiev on Malaysia Airlines flight MH17.

This Kiev air traffic controller is a citizen of Spain and was working in the Ukraine. He was taken off duty as a civil air-traffic controller along with other foreigners immediately after a Malaysia Airlines passenger aircraft was shot down over the Eastern Ukraine killing 295 passengers and crew on board.

The air traffic controller suggested in a private evaluation and basing it on military sources in Kiev, that the Ukrainian military was behind this shoot down. Radar records were immediately confiscated after it became clear a passenger jet was shot down.

Military air traffic controllers in internal communication acknowledged the military was involved, and some military chatter said they did not know where the order to shoot down the plane originated from.

Obviously it happened after a series of errors, since the very same plane was escorted by two Ukrainian fighter jets until 3 minutes before it disappeared from radar.

Radar screen shots also show an unexplained change of course of the Malaysian Boeing. The change of course took the aircraft directly over the Eastern Ukraine conflict region.

Some tweets received suggest this may have been a secret military uprising against the current Ukrainian president under the direction of formerly-jailed Prime Minister Timoshenko.

According to other rumors, the black box for this crashed Malaysian Airlines flight was taken by Donetsk separatists. A spokesperson for the rebel group said this black box would be sent to the Interstate Aviation Committee headquartered in Moscow.

The First Deputy Prime Minister of the self-proclaimed People's Republic of Donetsk, Andrew Purgin, stated that the flight recorders of the crashed aircraft will be transferred to Moscow for examination.

Sources say the Rebel group leadership hopes this would confirm the Ukrainian military actually shot down this aircraft. This was reported by the news agency Interfax-Ukraine.

ETN statement: The information in this article is independently confirmed and based on the statement of one airline controller and other tweets received.

#12 - Analysis from an Aerodynamics/Physics Standpoint - Ukrainian Army Responsible

RESUME OF ANALYSIS: What all this means is that if a BUK rocket was launched from the territory controlled by the Militia, the Boeing would have fallen much further to the south-east – i.e. will into the Russian territory. Otherwise, there would have been not time to detect the aircraft, perform electronic capture and launch the rocket. If this was a BUK, and not a jet fighter, then it is most likely that the launch was made from the territory controlled by the Ukrainian army, and the rocket was sent “chasing after” the airplane.

Original: 4yma3iy LiveJournal

I am not an aerodynamics specialist. I am a radioelectronics expert. Nevertheless, I specialize in aviation. If there are aerodynamics specialists here, please critique away.

Initial Data: the plane’s elevation is 10,000 metres, speed is 900 km/h (or 250 m/s).

Judging from the photos from the site of the crash, where all the pieces lie together in one place, it appears that the plane fell as a whole (i.e. some fragments may have broken off, but the fuselage remained intact). So, the aircraft well “as one piece” – i.e. it did not break apart in the air.

Accordingly, it must be considered as one body, the speed of which has a very large dependence on air resistance, particularly given the design features and its intended use.

The time of a body’s free fall:

T = sqrt(2h/g)

Thus, from a height of 10,000 metres, a body will fall:

T = sqrt(2*10000/9.8) = 45 second – HOWEVER! – this applies only in vacuum.

At the same time, the downward velocity when falling from this height is:

V = sqrt(2gh)

This speed will equal 442 m/s – HOWEVER! – this, once again, applies only in vacuum.

In real-life conditions a fall happens with a certain maximum speed, at which the force of air resistance becomes equal to the force of gravity. For a person’s body, for instance, this speed is equal to 40 m/s. For a bullet, this speed is approximately 50 m/s (depending on form and mass). Given the plane’s mass and its enormous size, let’s take this speed to be 40 m/s.

Accordingly, the plane would have been falling approximately 250 second – let’s round it off to 4 minutes, which is quite close to what happened.

Let’s accept that the reduction of horizontal speed also occurs pursuant to a linear equation with certain acceleration.

The vector of the force of front air resistance is directed against the speed of movement, and its magnitude is proportional to characteristic area S, density of the environment ρ, and speed V squared:

V=C((P*V^2)/2)*S

For the aerodynamically well-designed body of an aircraft, Cx < 0.3

Let’s calculate the force of air resistance at the speed of 250 m/s

0.3*1.26*250*250/2*50=590кН

The mass of Boeing 777 = 300 ton (in equipped state)

It means that horizontal deceleration due to air resistance would be 590/300 = 2 m/s^2 – just as I suspected (however, this is at the maximum speed).

Now, let’s take our favourite highschool equation:

X=(V1^2-V0^2)/2a

Given the nonlinear nature of deceleration, divide it in half – and we get 31 kilometres.

Let’s consider the strike distance of the rocket. Maximum strike distance of AGM-86 ALSM rocket:
At the height of 30 m – 20 km
At the height of 6,000 m – 26 km
The chance of a successful strike: 0.6 – 0.8

This distance should not be mistaken for the distance of detection.

Map: Yellow Pin to the West = Estimated Rocket Launch Location; Yellow Pin To the East = Crash Site

What all this means is that if a BUK rocket was launched from the territory controlled by the Militia, the Boeing would have fallen much further to the south-east – i.e. will into the Russian territory.

#10 - Eyewitness Recounts a Fighter Jet and 3 Explosions When MH17 Was Shot Down

Audio Recording Link: Cassad Net

Transcript of the Eyewitness Phone CallI

have a single sheet of paper that fell from the plane, with fresh blood – you can see it. Baggage also fell, further, in the area of the Petropavlovka settlement – there are fragments there. There is a group in VKontakte that already posted photos with pieces from the Boeing. Also, beyond Rassypnoye, near Terrikon, there are corpses. There were people there, and they saw it all.

I saw, personally, that there were 3 explosions. The first, the second and the third. So, after the first explosions I went up on the roof and saw that a plane was falling – it was already almost at the ground. There was an explosion, a black cloud, and two parachutists were descending – one was descending on his parachute on the wing. The second was flying down very fast – like a stone. And that is what I saw.

However, at that very same moment, a jet fighter was departing in the direction of Debaltsevo. It was over Rassypnoye and was flying toward Debaltsevo. How I understood it.

#9 - 11:53-12:40 – July 18, 2014 – Information Regarding the Boeing from Igor Strelkov

- regarding Boeing 777, Flight MH17:

Igor Strelkov: According to the information received from the people who collected the corpses, a large number of the corpses are “not fresh” – these are people who died a few days ago. I cannot vouch for complete accuracy of this information – of course, we will have to wait for conclusions from forensic specialists.

- “Somebody of course must have been piloting this plane, which, to boot, would be impossible to leave. The theory that the plane was full of dead people is, of course, breathtaking; however, it does not seem to make sense.”

Igor Strelkov: First of all, not all the people in the plane were dead prior to the fall.

Second, a large quantity of medication, including blood serum and so forth, was found in the airplane, which is not characteristic of a regular airliner. It looks like there was some kind of special medical cargo on board.

Third, I do not insist on anything (for now). It’s just that only moments ago I spoke with two individuals who personally gathered the corpses after the crash (both of them are from Shakhtersk and arrived at the scene less than half an hour after the catastrophe). I am writing exactly what they told me. They emphasized that a large number of the corpses were “completely bloodless” – it’s as if their blood clotted long before the catastrophe. They also remarked that there was an overwhelming putrid corpse stench, which was also noted by many locals – a smell like that could not have formed in half an hour in any weather, let alone in the cloudy, temperate weather we had yesterday.

Fourth, while I am usually very suspicious of any “conspiracy theories” myself, but the 18 of our fighters that were poisoned with chemical weapons at their positions in Semyonovka, the executions of the militiamen’s family members and all other “small joys of Ukie patriots” have convinced me that the Ukrainian government is capable of any villainy.

The pilots were, of course, perfectly alive – the entire cabin (and the front part is well preserved) was literally bathed in their blood.

#8 - Ukrainian Military Reports to Poroshenko That Rebels Have Not Captured any BUKs

According to Vitaliy Yarema, in an interview to Ukrainskaya Pravda, military officials reported to President Poroshenko immediately after the shooting down of Malaysian Airlines Boeing 777, Flight MH17, that the rebels have not captured any BUK systems from the Ukrainian Armed Forces. This is further confirmed in a statement by the Ukrainian Ministry of Defence, published on June 30, 2014.

Further Information: "Militias do not have Ukrainian Buk missile system - Ukraine general prosecutor"

KIEV, July 18. /ITAR-TASS/. Militias in the self-proclaimed Donetsk and Luhansk people’s republics do not have Ukrainian air defense missile systems Buk and S-300 at their disposal, Ukrainian Prosecutor-General Vitaly Yarema told Ukrainian Pravda newspaper on Friday.

“After the passenger airliner was downed, the military reported to the president that terrorists do not have our air defense missile systems Buk and S-300,” the general prosecutor said. “These weapons were not seized,” he added.

Ukrainian Interior Minister Anton Gerashchenko said on July 17 that the Malaysia Airlines Boeing 777 airliner had been downed by an air defense missile system Buk.

The Malaysia Airlines Boeing 777 airliner on the way from the Dutch city of Amsterdam to the Malaysian capital of Kuala Lumpur crashed in Ukraine on Thursday. All 298 people abroad the airliner died in the crash.

Transcript of the Video

If we try to forget the shock that I, along with my beloved Netherlands, are currently experiencing over this tragedy, and try to make sense of this situation unemotionally, as much as it can be possible, then the very first steps of the analysis of the fate of this flight inspire very terrifying, saddening thoughts.

A Ukrainian journalist, Olga Bondarenko, identified this information and the two of us, as we are together at the moment, came to certain conclusions. The following is provided to you without commentary.

Slavyansk is out of sight now …

by Dmitry Steshin (Komsomolskaya Pravda)
Translated from Russian by Gleb Bazov

I understand and share in the bitterness and resentment of those who found out this morning that the Militia has left Slavyansk. The news washed over everyone – the hoorah-patriots, the all-is-lost-patriots and even the cold analytical types. And now, please listen to a person who spent the last month and a half in Slavyansk. From the time of the very first checkpoints on the outskirts and to the almost complete encirclement of the city. When we broke out of Slavyansk along the by-pass “guerilla” road in the middle of June, a few hours later a Ukrainian army checkpoint appears there. That’s it; the city was blockaded on all sides. Supplying the garrison turned into a constant headache incommensurate with its tactical advantage. And, despite all the despair coming through in the public statements made by Igor Ivanovich, when he told the entire world that “we could not hold any longer than July 12th,” I am more than certain that, if NazGuard [Note: National Guard] did manage, on New Year’s eve, finally to enter Slavyansk, leveled to a cement pancake, from every other basement there would have been automatic rifles and grenade launchers hitting the Ukrainian troops.

In reality, the fate of Slavyansk was being decided in April-May, when Karachun Mount was taken. It is impossible to conduct a fulsome and active defence when you are faced with a strategic dominant height overhanging the city, several kilometres in length, seized by the adversary and laden with enemy artillery. And to fight, moreover, without any means of counter-battery warfare. Impossible, and, yet, Igor Ivanovich and the Militia managed to resist anyways. And not only to resist, but, in a mere few days, to disabuse the many-times superior enemy of any desire to engage the Militia in a direct confrontation. As far as I can tell, they abandoned any intention to assault the city as soon as the Militia returned Semyonovka under its control.

Undoubtedly, Slavyansk became the symbol of the “Russian Spring,” moreover – it entered history. Forever. But the purpose of the city was different. Slavyansk attracted to itself all the battle-worthy forces of the Ukrainian army, it enabled the mobilization of the Militia in Lugansk and Donetsk. Slavyansk gave Mozgovoi an opportunity to crack the border on land and in the air. Whereby something real (you do not need to tell me about virtual YouTube armoured columns) actually made it into the region, by dribs and drabs, including “Tunguskas” purchased at the GUM [Note: GUM, or “State Universal Market,” in Moscow]. Slavyansk enabled the rest of the region to set up almost a dozen reinforced centres of resistance. Finally, it was Slavyansk that brought down the majority of Ukrainian fliers. And the “Slavic Sky” came true in every regard. Finally, Slavyansk gave the South-East time to create political centres of power, allowed to legitimize them, and, of course, provided covering fire for the referendum. And, one last thing, – thousands of untried militiamen and volunteers passed through the trenches of Slavyansk, all with minimal losses.

By the middle of June, Slavyansk outlived itself. Having drawn and bound to itself an enormous army grouping, the city, at the same time, required an ever-larger garrison, and, in return, started to tie up the not inexhaustible human and technical resources of the Donbass People’s Army. Besides, being the legal Commander-in-Chief of the Militia, Igor Ivanovich could not provide fulsome guidance to his army from a besieged city. He had a direct line to the DPR government (I do not know about LPR), but this was, understandably, not enough for adequate control over the Militia units, each of which was beholden to the charisma of its direct commander. In a situation like that you need a “mega-Batka” [Note: Batka – an Old Man], but “mega-Batka” was forced to sit in Slavyansk and wax melancholy. I won’t be afraid of this word – he grew bored with blowing up endless ammunitions store on Karachun and pummeling Ukrainian checkpoints on the near and far outskirts of the city. Igor Ivanovich needed operational freedom, and, this night, he finally found it. Don’t forget – he came to Slavyansk some time ago with a few battered automatic rifles and even smoothbore “Saiga” and “Vepr.” He left with a column of armoured vehicles. No need to even mention the loads of other equipment. This, undoubtedly, is yet another testimony to the dizzying victory of the Ukrainian army, which got a mousetrap instead of a trophy. Well, not an empty mousetrap. As I understand it, the Ukrainian army has yet to enter the city. Igor Ivanovich, a veteran of two Chechen wars, naturally made sure to leave behind enough maneuverable groups with grenade launchers and cover. And it is no accident that Messr. Tymchuk has been squealing about thousands of militiamen breaking through from Kramatorsk to Donetsk. Messr. Tymchuk has no idea that the road from Kramatorsk to Donetsk is absolutely free. But what Messr. Tymchuk should really think about is his fighters, sitting dejected at the Kramatorsk airfield and in the Donetsk airport. As I understand it, in the next few hours they will be added to the number of the “Heavenly Hundred.” And, in addition, Messr. Tymchuk will soon have to explain to his readers – why did the Ukrainian army spend two months battling with Slavyansk and what will it do with the city now?

On the Issue of Berezin's Account of the Ukrainian Rape and Murder in the Village of Saurovka

On the Issue of Berezin's Account of the Ukrainian Rape and Murder in the Village of Saurovka (and on the matter of the response by some readers of the Vineyard of the Saker Blog thereto)

by Gleb Bazov

First, apologies for the mayhem caused - it certainly was sufficient to provoke two response notes from you. And, for a good reason. My own initial reaction to Berezin's "essay" (damn the [reader] who called it that - the fact that the man is a published writer and can put two words together on paper (and so can his translator) should not count to his detriment or deter from his voice; on the contrary, the effect of an exploding bomb is caused precisely by the effectiveness of conveying such information in a compelling manner) was utter stupefaction.

I waited some time before publishing it. In the end I decided that I would not forgive myself for not publicizing his words simply because the story sounded too horrific (to be true? - no, not at all, too horrific not to be censored as false by a human mind, like mine, so used to self-censorship as a means of survival in a society that abhors non-mainstream accounts and points of view and denigrates (I am using that purposefully) them in order to silence dissent). I could go on for some time, with reference to post-modern, systems analysis and continentalist philosophers on the flaws of our social organization and expression models, but the point is self-evident without that kind of verboseness.

Let us put it this way: Berezin is Strelkov's deputy. He spent some time in Slavyansk, and it was there that Strelkov chose him to act in his stead in Donetsk, at the seat of the DPR government. Inasmuch as I know Strelkov and his character by now (his harsh, but fair, decision to execute two kidnappers among the militia, the type of men he has surrounded himself with, to wit, Motorola, and the impossible success of his rag-tag coalition of patriots in Slavyansk, all being prime reference sources for my opinion of Strelkov), I doubt sincerely that he would have chosen a man (I mean Berezin) who did not conform to the highest standards Strelkov expects of himself.

Strelkov may be wrong, he probably often is, but he is nothing if not a man of the highest calibre. He admits his errors freely, rejects platitudes and undeserved praise, and insists that his talents, which have been sufficient to hold off over 10,000 Ukrainian troops, not be aggrandized (see his earlier statement I translated). Above all, Strelkov is a military man, who understand the importance of building a winning cadre. And, as such, in choosing a man to act in his stead (and I must emphasize - his deputy, not a mere common soldier), Strelkov would likely have selected someone who also matches these characteristics.

Now, all that is supposition. Strelkov could well have made a mistake. And, I am sure, that, in many ways, he would have preferred Berezin to be more active and help Slavyansk beyond the meagre assistance they are currently receiving. But was he wrong about Berezin's moral qualities? Did he choose a man who would lie, and lie in a way that Strelkov would obviously never permit himself (do I need to refer to the body of tempered, measured reports, cautious and conservative, that we have to date received from Strelkov?).

What is more important, in that regard, is to consider how Berezin has behaved to date. Will any of the skeptical readers of the Vineyard of the Saker blog please count the number of times that I have translated Berezin's statements or, in fact, simply the number of times he has made statements so far? I wish he made them more often. Statements by a writer, like Berezin, are enjoyable to translate. And, yet, I can recall only 3-4 statements in total (including the one that he just made, after midnight on June 26, 2014) that were made by Berezin to date.

What does this suggest to a keen observer of the various sources that talk for the DPR government? That Berezin is, perhaps, the most laconic and sparing with words of them all. All of his statements have been brief, he has not (that I remember) given any interviews (unlike Strelkov, for instance, who gives them sometimes twice a day) and he has been largely in the shadow of the events that have been unfolding elsewhere. Berezin is performing a crucial function - organizing the affairs of the emerging DPR army in the area, arranging supply lines, training recruits, structuring the military organization.

Unlike Strelkov, Berezin has his hand on the pulse of the entire organization - which is why he can talk about what is happening not just in Slavyansk, but elsewhere. No wonder then, that he gets reports from Militia fighters at the Saur-Mogila memorial. And, after what I am sure was very careful consideration (I heard rumours of these atrocities some time ago), Berezin decided that one of his few statements to date will be made on the subject of these crimes. If he had been shooting his mouth off, and made nonsensical claims left, right and centre, it is highly unlikely that you would have seen the translation I provided (for the same reason as, for instance, I filter out from my translations all the loud-mouth verbiage coming from Pavel Gubarev these days).

Some of The Vineyard of the Saker readers, who follow this war from the standpoint of a "silver platter" do not seem to understand the filtering that goes on and the reasons why a specific translation may be done, while another text will be ignored. I would recommend that they engage in the similar amount of research that you and I do, before making claims as to what is possible or not. Odessa, the Kiev Trade Unions House, the murder of a Polish Holocaust historian in Lvov, the massacre in Mariupol, the use of prohibited flechette and incendiary white phosphorus ammunition in Slavyansk would be good starting points (among many other such examples).

Women in Odessa were first raped, then butchered, then burned alive to ensure they would not be identified. There are rooms in the Trade Unions House that were cemented right after the massacre. No one alive, other than the Nazi murderers and the collaborationist police, has ever seen the basement of the building - even though every report by a survivor that I have seen (and I have read and seen close to 20 so far) points to the fact that they barely escaped being dragged down into the basement, where most others were taken and killed. And, as The Saker has correctly pointed out (see here and here) this was in front of multiple video cameras and hundreds of witnesses. Nineteen of the survivors have since been murdered. Others are hiding wherever they can.

As for the kind readers of the Vineyard of the Saker blog that suggest that "essays" should be accompanied by photographs and videos, I suggest they make a trip to Saurovka. Apparently, they expect the vastly outnumbered Militia fighters, who barely hold on to the strategic Saur-Mogila height, dug in, often without provisions and a change of clothes, to make a trip to the stronghold of the enemy in the region, their encampment in Saurovka, and watch (and tape) the rape that goes on. I am not sure how this could be done. Perhaps I am too feeble-minded. (I won't even address the disbelief at a Polish female sniper with an American rifle - really? And this disbelief comes after Bolotov took prisoner and showcased to the world a Ukrainian female ranking officer, a helicopter pilot who was correcting the enemy artillery shelling and was likely involved in the murder of the Russian journalists?)

As for how does Berezin know all that has been happening in Saurovka? Well, I will do my best to find that out. However, it is really simple - the Militia has intelligence-gathering groups that go out to scope out enemy positions, for one. Second, I am sure they can see well, from the height of the Saur-Mogila memorial, that the NazGuard have adopted Saurovka as their quarters. Finally, let's consider this: one day, the phones don't answer in Saurovka - why are they silent? Another day, a Militia fighter finds a woman that was raped, killed and thrown to the side. Perhaps someone managed to escape and joined the militia. And, perhaps, they can observe some of what goes on from up above.

All this is supposition, without a direct answer from Berezin, but to those who dismiss his "essay" out of hand, I will only say this: once upon a time, when the Soviet troops became the first to witness the horrors of the Holocaust, they were still disbelieved, until photographic evidence emerged. Were the Soviet soldiers right or were the people who demanded photographic evidence, because their socialized minds, much like mine, refused to believe that such atrocities could be possible?

We will, someday, find out the full account of the Ukrainian societal collapse, and Saurovka will be just the tip of the iceberg.

Kind regards,

Gleb Bazov

PS. Sorry for the lengthy rant. I did not intend it, but it all came out.
